CAT URINE COLOR CHART

Your Cat Can't Talk, But Their Litter Can

What the Colors Can Mean

  • Blue

Blue may indicate a pH consistent with urinary infections or higher stone risk. Highly alkaline urine can increase the risk for struvite crystal/stone formation.

  • Dark yellow / olive green

Dark yellow / olive green indicates urine within a typical, healthy range.

  • Orange

Orange may indicate a pH consistent with metabolic acidosis or kidney tubular acidosis. Calcium oxalate crystals can be more likely to form in acidic urine.

The Science Behind PrettyLitter

PrettyLitter helps cat owners keep an eye on pH changes at home, so they know when it’s time to call the vet. It’s not a substitute for full urinalysis, lab testing, or a vet’s expert judgement, but it can prompt you to schedule a vet visit before problems escalate into more serious issues.

The resources here dig into why urinary pH matters for cat health, and why this one simple number still holds real clinical value when it’s looked at in the context of urinary tract clinical symptoms.

If you have questions or concerns about the health or wellness of your cat, please consult your veterinarian.

Science You Can See.

Say Goodbye to Odors

In an independent study, PrettyLitter reduced litter box odor by up to 82% - more than any other litter tested.

They measured it two ways: sensory panel testing and molecular analysis. Real people noticed the difference. Lab equipment confirmed why.

Our superpower: absorbency

One of many, but we'll start here. PrettyLitter crystals absorb more than 1.5x their weight in liquid. You get lighter litter, less odor, and less mess.

Engineered for superior absorbency, silica gel rapidly locks in moisture and odor. This keeps litter drier, lighter, and longer-lasting than traditional clay options.

Here’s What People Had To Say

Testers rated PrettyLitter’s smell as slightly pleasant, compared to strongly unpleasant for untreated litter.

A 124% improvement in odors was reported - not bad for a litter box!

“As cat parents ourselves, we create products we trust in our own homes.”

Safety You Can Trust.

We Test For Safety

This starts with minimizing dust. Dust control is a priority because it impacts respiratory health for both cats and humans, supports allergy management, and helps keep homes cleaner with less tracking.

Independent testing that simulates real, everyday use found that PrettyLitter produces extremely low airborne dust. Better for cats, better for you.

Chart of respirable dust measured during use of PrettyLitter
Why does low dust matter? Lower dust helps reduce inhalation exposure for both cats and pet parents, especially during pouring or scratching.
Chart of total dust measured during use of PrettyLitter
What does this really mean? It means less airborne dust and a cleaner, more comfortable space for both you and your cat.

What's It Made Of?

Is Silica Safe for Cats?

PrettyLitter is non-toxic, pet-safe, and made from amorphous silica. Our litter contains no crystalline silica.

There are two types of silica: one that has scary health effects, and one that does not. Because both compounds are called “silica,” it can be difficult to know the difference.

The two types of silica are crystalline silica and amorphous silica (also known as silica gel). They have distinct differences in their molecular structure which causes them to have different health effects.

Made with amorphous silica gel - a non-toxic, pet-safe material. A few important distinctions:

Those “Do not eat” labels you see on silica packets? Those signal a choking hazard, not toxicity.

Not all silica is the same: amorphous silica (used in PrettyLitter) is safe, while crystalline silica (found in some clay litters) can be harmful when inhaled over time.

Silica is a naturally-occurring compound (SiO2) that comes in two forms: crystalline silica (or c-silica) and amorphous silica (a-silica or silica gel).

Amorphous silica has a more disordered structure and is generally considered less hazardous. It is commonly used in food additives, food wrappings, toothpaste, and cosmetics, and exposure to it at typical environmental or commercial levels is safe for humans and cats.

What other common items include crystalline silica? Quartz, bricks, glass, ceramics, plaster, granite, and concrete.

A cat parent caring for their cat

From the About page

We believe health insights should be a part of your routine

I’ve loved pets my whole life. Growing up, my dad constantly brought animals home—birds, dogs, even a goat. The pet I was closest to was Gingi, an orange tabby my sister gave me for my 10th birthday. She was with me through middle school, high school, college, and my first apartment. We grew up together.

One day, Gingi suddenly became lethargic and stopped eating. At the vet, tests revealed she had been silently battling a terminal illness for months. Despite thousands of dollars and many procedures that extended her life by six months, the experience taught me a heartbreaking truth: cats often hide illness until they’re in too much pain to conceal it.

From ingredient selection through final production, every component and process is evaluated against stringent safety, quality, and regulatory standards. We utilize non-toxic amorphous silica gel and partner with trusted suppliers, ensuring full transparency, traceability, and compliance across our supply chain.

Our products are developed through controlled testing combining laboratory analysis, real-world performance validation, and continuous quality monitoring to ensure both efficacy and safety for the cats and the people who care for them.

  • Modern innovation, made meaningful.

Innovation that actually improves life with your cat. Smart, intentional, and never complicated.

  • Performance you can see (and smell less of).

Results that speak for themselves. PrettyLitter exists to make everyday cat care easier, smarter, and more intuitive.

Safe for cats, safe for humans

How the safety testing works

We partnered with an accredited third party testing facility to complete a rigorous safety assessment using one of the most advanced testing models available: human precision-cut lung slices (hPCLS), which preserve the actual cellular structure and biological function of human lungs.

Here's what the research found:

  • Lung tissue stayed healthy, with no signs of cell damage
  • Results held up across repeated exposures over 11 days, confirming safety

These findings build on our existing dust and in-home exposure testing, and together they point to the same conclusion: PrettyLitter's amorphous silica is safe for lungs, even under conditions designed to be more extreme than anything your household would ever see.

We know cats have a habit of getting into everything - including their litter. So we put PrettyLitter through rigorous safety testing, because your cat's curiosity shouldn't cost your peace of mind.

Can My Cat Eat PrettyLitter?
We hoped you'd ask. We don't expect your cat to eat PrettyLitter, but we tested what would happen if they did. In plain terms: if your cat gets curious and ingests a small amount, we expect it to pass through normally.
How do you test?
Raw materials and additives are assessed by professional toxicologists. We test not just for what our litter does, but what it doesn't do.
Do vets approve of PrettyLitter?
Yes, PrettyLitter is pet-safe and household-friendly.
What happens after launch?
We're committed to ongoing product testing to ensure PrettyLitter continues to meet our highest standards.

5 Reasons Your Cat is Peeing Outside the Litter Box

Before the odor of cat pee gets any worse and there is urine marking on your carpet, here’s a quick guide to find out why your kitty is behaving this way and the best ways to help them use their litter box once again.

Reason 2: Something Is Stressing Them Out

Our feline friends are very sensitive animals. Any small, trivial change could actually be a stress trigger for them. These little things can totally throw off your pet’s emotional balance and behavior. What are some potential triggers that may cause stress for your cat?

  • Moving to a new home
  • A new furniture addition
  • Someone new is visiting your home for the first time
  • There’s a new addition to the family: a baby or a new pet
  • Deodorant or perfume-scented litter (PrettyLitter is odorless!)

Reason 3: Wrong Litterbox Location

If your cat’s litter box is placed in the part of the house that has heavy foot traffic, it’s likely that your kitty feels that it is not a comfortable place to pee. Find a place in your home that’s nice and quiet and put their litter box there.

Reason 4: Maybe It's Too Small

Over time, felines can outgrow certain spaces they’ve once felt comfortable in (ie: their box). It’s quite possible that their litter box is too small for them.

Reason 5: Maybe It's Too Dirty

Litter box hygiene is incredibly important, not only to your cat’s comfort level and hygiene but also to your own personal hygiene at home. As a pet parent, it is your responsibility to clean out your cat’s litter box regularly (1-2 times a day) to make sure they’re comfortable going whenever nature calls.

How to Help Your Cat Use Their Litter Box Again

  • Don’t get angry, they’re not doing it out of spite.
  • Is something or someone stressing them out?
  • Find a nice and quiet place in the house for the litter box.
  • Create a stress-free environment for your pet to pee.
  • Clean their litter box frequently.
  • Avoid strange scents and use odorless PrettyLitter.
  • Once they start using their box again, monitor their health with PrettyLitter’s color-changing litter technology.

Keeping Your Litter Box Clean Has Never Been This Easy

With PrettyLitter, it's easy to use and faster to clean than clumping clay litter. Step 1: Pour It Out. Pour the litter into a fresh, sanitized litter box. Ensure 2 inches of depth.

Gather Essential Info for Your Cat Sitter

Before you hand over the keys, gather together the information your house sitter will rely on. Think of it as creating a quick guidebook to your cat’s universe. Start with a short list of key contacts:

  • The nearest 24-hour animal hospital
  • A dependable friend or neighbor who can help in a pinch

This list gives your sitter a sense of security—and gives you peace of mind. Next, include the day-to-day essentials:

  • Your cat’s feeding schedule
  • Any medications with step-by-step instructions

If your cat has special habits like curling up under the bed when guests arrive or claiming the laundry basket as a weekend suite, make note of that, too. Include as many details as you think your pet sitter will need about your cat's unique characteristics. These details help the pet sitter understand what’s normal for your pet.

Stock Up on Supplies for Your Cat

Nothing puts a sitter on edge like realizing they’ve run out of something essential. To avoid mid-trip stress, make sure that you have everything you need from your pet sitter checklist so that supplies are organized and easy to find.

Create a Safe, Comfortable Space

Start by choosing a calm corner in your home. Set up their favorite bed, a soft blanket, and a few toys that hold their attention. Providing a variety of toys helps ensure that your cat stays entertained.

And before you leave, check the room for potential hazards. Secure loose cords, move any tempting-but-toxic plants, and tuck away things they shouldn’t nibble on. A little safety check goes a long way and helps your cat stay relaxed in their environment.

Leave Clear Routines and Final Instructions

Before heading out the door, do a final walkthrough. Check windows, set thermostats to a comfortable temperature, and confirm that your sitter has everything they need. Make sure they know exactly how to reach you and when you’ll be checking in.

Secure the Litter Box for a pet sitter

Finally, make sure the litter box stays in a quiet, familiar spot. Let your pet sitter know the specific litter brand and type you use to maintain consistency for your feline. Leave a brief note explaining how the color-changing crystals help monitor potential urinary concerns.

Plus, one bag lasts up to a month, making it a perfect fit for pet-sitting situations where you want everything simple, tidy, and low-maintenance.
